WISCONSIN RAPIDS
NURSING & REHABILITATION
CENTER
WINS INSULATED CONCRETE FORM (ICF) CONCRETE DESIGN AWARD
Madison,
Wis.
–
A nursing and rehabilitation center made of concrete earned
a 2009 Decorative Concrete Design Award. The awards are a part of a prestigious program showcasing best uses
of ready-mixed concrete in
Wisconsin
and
Michigan’s
Upper Peninsula (UP). The
Wisconsin Ready Mixed Concrete Association (WRMCA), GeoTest, Inc. Sika
Corporation, and the Wisconsin Chapter of ACI International cosponsored the
bi-annual awards, now entering its 30th year. A distinguished panel of Wisconsin/UP educators and
construction professionals determined award winners.
The Excellence Imagined themed
Concrete Design Award Ceremony took place on Friday, March 5, 2010
at the
Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells.
The 88 unit 80,000 sq foot rehabilitation center is the first commercial two-story ICF
structure erected in the
Wisconsin
Rapids area. The main structural component of the building was 2800 cubic yards of
100% ready mixed concrete with the exception of the precast roof and 2nd
floor slabs.
The
Wisconsin Rapids
Nursing & Rehabilitation
Center project started in January 2009. The footings and walls were poured in the middle of winter and
required strictly following proper cold weather practices.
The
interior concrete slabs were poured in March, April and May. The ICF walls were placed from May through August and required a pump
for placement. Adhering to the
slump requirements during this phrase was very critical due to the
possibility of form blowouts. A
superplasticizer was utilized in the mix to help alleviate this problem and
also to help provide flowability of the concrete in the forms.
The primary mix design was ¾ aggregate, 4000 PSI mix using either a mid or
high range water reducer. The energy
efficient building is expected to be completed in May 2010.
